Beyond the Scars Summer Camp 2012
Camp Beyond the Scars - Mission Statement
"To provide young burn survivors with a safe and fun camp environment that encourages healing, personal growth and character development within a natural setting."
Since our inception in 2003, we The Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation have had the dream of being able to send our local burn survivor children from UMC’s Lions Burn Care Center to a burn camp just for them. Since 2010 we have finally achieved this goal for the third year in a row!
This year we are thrilled to announce that we are sending (8) eight local burn survivors and (4) local firefighter camp counselors from Southern Nevada to San Diego’s Burn Institutes 2012 summer camp session.
The San Diego Burn Institute has been perfecting this special camp experience since 1987, and we have been lucky enough to be welcomed into their program, now going on our 3rd year.
Many of the camp counselors are burn survivors and/or firefighters. Since its inception in 1987, the Camp Beyond the Scars has made a major difference in the lives of more than 1,600 burned children. Activities focus on achieving and enhancing self-esteem, including efforts to create positive experiences and overcome negative ones. The camp program has proven to be an effective means to provide much needed counseling to child survivors of severe burn injuries. Thanks to our generous community and local sponsors we have been able to double our numbers this year and we are excited to send these wonderful kids for a great experience this summer!
Thanks to our generous community we hope to be able to provide this experience for future local children here in the Las Vegas community. Please take a look at some of the campers and their experiences in 2010 and 2011.

First off, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to attend my first burn camp. You asked me before camp to let you know how my experience was and I thought it would be a relatively simple task. In reality, it is hard to put into words how the week impacted me because there was an incredible amount of personal and professional growth that took place. I was assigned to be a teen girl counselor and was a bit scared at first, but the moment we all met in the cabin I became the newest member of their family. All the girls in my cabin had been to camp several times and repeatedly said it was always the best week of their summer. The amount of strength and courage in those teen girls was very powerful and it was a privilege to hear their stories and be a part of their life for the week.
Working as a Child Life Specialist in the burn unit is the most amazing job but working with kids and families in pain everyday can start to wear you down. Camp gave me an opportunity to interact and spend time with burn survivors in a safe environment where daily dressings and skin grafts are a thing of the past. The week re-energized me and gave me hope for the future of burn survivors.
As you know, I recently started a pediatric burn support group. The attendance has been low and there have been times I have felt discouraged. But after attending camp, I saw first-hand the vital role peer support plays in the journey to healing both inside and out. The teen girls taught me the importance of perseverance and talked a lot about the adults in their life that positively and negatively impacted their recovery. They helped me gain insight into the best way to help them on their journey to recovery and how to help their parents and siblings as well. The burn survivors I met at camp definitely made their way into my heart and I am a much better person after spending the week with them."
"Once again, I am blessed to have had the opportunity to spend a week with so many amazing burn survivors. If there are any upcoming fundraisers or events that you need help with, please do not hesitate to call me. I volunteer on a regular basis facilitating grief support groups for kids and families and would love to give back to the burn foundation as well. Thanks again and hopefully we can connect soon."
