Since our
inception in
2003, we, The
Firefighters of
Southern Nevada
Burn Foundation,
have had the
dream of being
able to send our
local burn
survivor
children from
UMC’s Lions Burn
Care Center to a
burn camp just
for them. As of
last year, we
finally achieved
this goal for
the 1st time!
The San Diego
Burn Institute
has been
perfecting this
special camp
experience since
1987, and we
have been lucky
enough to be
welcomed into
their program,
now going on our
2nd year.
As you know, the
economy has
really taken a
toll on everyone
and this year we
really struggled
in achieving
this goal once
again. We have
been extremely
lucky because of
some local
heartfelt
helping hands
within our
community and we
cannot express
to you more how
grateful we are
for the local
children we were
able to send
this year. “Beyond
the Scars”
camp has been
designed for
kids that are
survivors of
burn injuries,
and the camp has
made
extraordinary
leaps and bounds
in this area,
and for many
kids has changed
their lives.
The camp places
participants in
a social setting
with other
burn-injured
children, which
offers them the
support they
need to
establish and
enhance their
self-esteem. As
we know, burns
affect the whole
family, not just
the child, and
this gives them
the comfort to
be amongst other
like-children
who understand
their pain and
experiences in
the outside
world. They
learn together
and form life
long bonds and
friendships and even
have the ability
to become
counselors
themselves when
they are old
enough.
Many of the camp
counselors are
burn survivors
and/or
firefighters.
Since its
inception in
1987, the
Camp
Beyond the Scars
has made a major
difference in
the lives of
more than 1,600
burned children.
Activities focus
on achieving and
enhancing
self-esteem,
including
efforts to
create positive
experiences and
overcome
negative ones.
The camp program
has proven to be
an effective
means to provide
much needed
counseling to
child survivors
of severe burn
injuries.
Thanks
to our generous
community we
hope to be able
to provide this
experience for
future local
children here in
the Las Vegas
community.

the campers and
their
experiences in
2010 and 2011.
